Have arrived in Alice with the Goulburn Cubs for a tilt at the 2008 Masters title. These lads have been coming here for a few years and former Bear Leo Quoyle suggested I might be a good fit. As one of the younger players (it is an over 35's tournament) I can expect to see plenty of game time from the mound
Most flew in on Friday to enable us to get together as many hadn't seen each other since the last games in 2006. A good bunch of blokes with some very different backgrounds. Big start on Friday night with an open bar here at Toddy's and a late migration to the casino. Like many I stumbled home just before dawn and took advantage of the free Saturday. Chilled day spent by the pool - it is 32 degrees and blue skies - with a brief training run in the afternoon. The field looks in top condition and looking forward to the start tomorrow.
Saturday night was the games opening. There was a parade for all of the participants through the main street followed by opening ceremony and concert at the local park. With over 4,500 participants (not sure if the term athlete would be correct) and most of the town taking part it was great evening. Fireworks, some old school bands and plenty of booze made for a decent night out. We chose to wear the sensible shoes since we have an early start Sunday - plenty of chances to make up for it over the week.
First game is against the Bulls. There seems to be a good rivalry between us, helped by the fact that we are staying at the same place. I'll be starting on the mound and fingers crossed I'll get an early win to set the tone.
